  REVIEW:

Alpha Dog, starring Justin Timberlake  . . . as if taking little Britney Spears innocence wasn't enough, now he's got my $8 too!

Another movie in a long list of movies lately that are based on true events. Some are actually really good, like Freedom Writers released just last week. But, there are some like this movie that are about stories which are probably not worth telling. The movie stars Bruce Willis, Sharon Stone and Justin Timberlake and takes place over 15 years ago. Justin's character is buddies with Johny Truelove (Emile Hersch) who is their so-called "gang" leader and drug dealer extrodinaire. They are all just a bunch of guys from wealthy families in California that have no ambition and get caught up in violence and drugs. A deal between Johnny and one of his guys goes bad and the guy owes Johnny money. When he can't pay, he kidnaps the guy's little brother and takes him hostage. The kid ends up enjoying days filled with drugs, sex, violence and bad language. When it looks like things might work out, the ending turns bad.

Justin Timberlake . . . we’re fine with him bringing sexy back, but now he needs to bring our $8 back!  Actually, Timberlake is a little annoying early in the film, but evolves into an interesting, believable character by the movie’s end.  As for the rest of Alpha Dog, the movie’s got some stuff that works, and some stuff that definitely does not.  The acting, dialogue, even some odd, creative filmmaking techniques all result in some compelling moments, as well as some very annoying moments.  Overall, though, the filmmakers do a pretty decent job of telling the story - a tragic, violent, completely bizarre story that most will find disturbing rather than entertaining.  So although he does a fine job, you Justin Timberlake fans might be much happier watching one of his music videos instead.

  MOVIE NIGHT TRAFFIC LIGHT:

On the Movie Night Traffic Light on a scale of GREEN meaning “Go – it’s a must see”, YELLOW meaning “Caution – it’s okay” and RED meaning “No - stop don’t do it."

We rate Alpha Dog RED.  Stop – this is not good enough.
